Mariners Guillermo Heredia 1st Half Fall League Update

The Mariners are hoping that the Arizona Fall League will help to build Guillermo Heredia’s confidence for next year. Heredia is the only one of the four M’s batters in the AFL that actually has some experience on the big stage. Here is how Heredia is doing through the first half of the AFL season.

Guillermo Heredia has had a taste of the big leagues, and that is surely motivating him to perform at a high-level this AFL season.

In forty-five games with the Mariners, Heredia batted .250 with three doubles and a homer run. He is not a power hitter, so when he hits one or two long bombs, it is a pleasant addition.

So far in the AFL season, Heredia is placing his hits perfectly and using his speed to leg out a handful of extra-base hits. Here is where Heredia stands after his seven games in the AFL.

Just like Tyler O’Neil, Heredia got off to a quick start. In his first game, he went 2-4 with a double and a triple. To put that into comparison with his Mariners stats, Heredia couldn’t get a triple in nearly fifty games.

In two of his next three games, he added two more doubles as part of two multi-hit games. In one of those games he also had three RBI and drew two walks.

Even though he has struggled in his last three games -he hit 1-8 (the one hit was a home run- his overall numbers are pretty incredible.

In seven games with twenty-one at-bats, his batting average is .333. And, even more spectacular, his On-Base Percentage (OBP) is .500.

He is on pace to accumulate about ten doubles this AFL season in less than twenty games. Over his ninety-three games in AA and AAA, Heredia had thirteen doubles. And, his three doubles already matches his MLB total over those forty-five games.

It is fair to say that Heredia is only helping his chances to continue to be part of the Mariners forty-man roster next season. If he continues to excel in the second half of the AFL season and he is a valuable piece of the Mariners spring training roster, we may see more of Heredia then we did last season.
