D-backs pitchers focus on throwing two-seam fastballs
Diamondbacks pitchers have been throwing two-seam fastballs more often this season. The Arizona Republic notes that D-backs starters have gone from throwing the pitch 11 percent of the time last year to 31 percent this season. Allen Webster has dramatically increased his usage of the pitch. He’s gone from employing it a modest 16 percent of the time last season to 51 percent of the time this year in his three starts since being called up from the minors.
It’s definitely not a coincidence that D-backs pitchers have been throwing more two-seamers. According to the Republic, chief baseball officer Tony La Russa said, "We're definitely emphasizing it.”
The Republic points out its successful use in a recent series against the Giants. Chase Anderson threw it 25 percent of the time and didn’t allow a hit off if it, while Webster limited the Giants to a .100 average while throwing it for half of his pitches during his outing.
