Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson to open season on the disabled list

Published Mar. 14, 2016 3:53 p.m. ET

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson underwent surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow back in August, but it's some soreness in his shoulder which will force him to begin this season on the disabled list.

According to a report from Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times, no date has been set for Wilson's next bullpen session, and he could be out of action for the first month or two of the regular season.

“We backed him off a mound until he’s ready to take the next step,” Manager Mike Scioscia said, via the Times. “He’s coming along a little slower. He’ll be ready when he’s ready.”

The 34-year-old left-hander went 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA last season, and is entering the final year of a contract worth $77.5 million that will pay him $20 million this season.
