What a week for Wie: Even 'Happy Gilmore' sent her flowers

Michelle Wie received a gift that almost any golfer would kill for — flowers from Happy Gilmore. Wie won the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst last week, the first major championship of her career.

She ended her decade-long drought in style, too, drinking beer from the trophy she won. For her, though, receiving flowers from actor Adam Sandler, who played Gilmore in the 1996 golf comedy, was quite the honor.

“I feel like that’s the biggest prize in golf, getting flowers from Happy Gilmore,” Wie said during a news conference Thursday, via Golf Channel.

It’s not the first time Wie has been linked to the actor, as the two played together when she took part in the Pro Junior Challenge as a teenager.

Wie also received praise for her win from the likes of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer and former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice. After her victory, Wie went on a media tour through New York. She enjoyed her time basking in the limelight, but Wie said she’s ready to get some much-needed rest as she prepares for her next tournament.

“I’m more excited to sleep,” Wie said. “I’m kind of just like falling asleep in my chair, just chugging coffee.”

Wie will be back on the golf course Friday at Pinnacle Country Club in Arkansas for her next LPGA Tour event.
