Will Texas fire Charlie Strong after Oklahoma loss?
Will the Texas Longhorns fire Charlie Strong after the loss to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry?
The Texas Longhorns almost got a second consecutive signature win over the rival Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry. Instead, the Longhorns lost a close game they arguably should’ve won given the turnovers from the Sooners.
There were reports that Strong needs to finish the season with the Longhorns with at least of a record of 8-4 to keep his job. This loss drops the Longhorns below .500 with a 2-3 record, and one loss away from that 8-4 mark with more than half the schedule to come.
There is a strong argument that Strong has the Longhorns on the cusp of breaking through to the next level with a full slate of young talent he recruited in the program now.
But with coaches like Les Miles on the market, Strong’s time with the Longhorns could very well be coming to an end. The Longhorns reportedly coveted Alabama’s Nick Saban and when they failed to lure him away from Tuscaloosa, they settled with Louisville’s Strong.
If Les Miles was interested in the Texas job, and you’d have to assume the Board of Regents is exploring it, Strong’s job could be over with. They might wait until the end of the season, but if Miles is interested the writing could be on the wall.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance that Strong could stay in Austin. He has recruited well, and has the program on the cusp of breaking out and they might give him one more season to prove himself.
