Why There Should Never Be an Eight Team Playoff
Four team playoff is just right!
You know the pundits in the media will soon be telling everyone why this college football season proves there should be an eight team playoff. The talking heads spewing their nonsense all over the airwaves will inadvertently be proving the case that four is the appropriate number.
Has there ever been more a more intriguing end to a college football season? “The Game” between Ohio State and Michigan was even more important this year because either team could make the playoff or be left out. The Wisconsin-Minnesota and Penn State-Michigan State games took on more significance as well.
Everyone is wondering what the Playoff Committee rankings will be like tonight heading into Saturday’s conference championship games. There are multiple scenarios of which four teams will be included in the playoff depending on the outcomes of those games. Do you really think there would be that much interest if there were an eight team playoff?
Fans whose teams could be ranked as high as No. 8 or as low as 10 would be on pins and needles if that were the case. But would the rest of the college football world even care?
This year is a good example. If the favorites win the important games to be played next Saturday, the first eight teams may not change from last week’s rankings. Just the order in which they are ranked.

Penn State may be in a battle for the eighth spot with other three loss teams, but the other ranked teams would be secure. And who wants a three loss team in the playoff anyway?
With upsets in the Pac 12 and Big 12- who doesn’t play a conference championship game- Colorado replaces Washington and Oklahoma State will move into the final eight. Boy, that would be “Must See TV.
And during the season, would there be as much interest in each and every game when your team is attempting to make it to the final eight instead of the final four? I doubt it. But every game is important now regardless of when it’s played.
Like most college football fans, I am very interested to see how the College Football Playoff Committee will have the teams ranked this week. My eyes will be on the few games played on Saturday that will determine the final four teams.
As an Ohio State fan, if eight teams made into the playoff this season I would be in fine shape knowing that the Buckeyes would be included. But that is not the best thing for college football.
There is a possibility the Buckeyes could be left out of a four team playoff again this year. I may be disappointed for the second consecutive season, but I certainly won’t be bored I’ll guarantee you that.
The NCAA should never expand the playoff to eight teams, four is just ideal.
