Wait, is 7-loss Rutgers really still bowl eligible?
If you thought the watering down of college football's bowls had reached its limit with 6-6 teams, think again.
NJ.com points out that the local team, Rutgers, has not been eliminated from postseason contention despite losing its seventh game of the season last week against Nebraska.
How can that be?
At 3-7 overall, the best Rutgers can hope for is to conclude the regular-season with wins at Army and home versus Maryland. That would leave the Scarlet Knights at 5-7 overall, and in most years a sub-.500 campaign would've left your team home for the holidays.
But that was before college football's governing powers added more games to its bowl lineup. In a system that now includes 40 bowls, 80 of the 127 Football Bowl Subdivision teams will make it to a postseason game.
So will there be a need a need to go down this path?
NJ.com has us covered again with the note that never before have more than 78 teams won at least six games, so a 5-7 bowl team is almost certain to happen.
And if it does, Rutgers and fellow Big Ten squad Nebraska could be high on the list of potential postseason teams with that record thanks to their strong APR scores.
