Tide Locks Down West, Berth in SEC Championship Game

Top-ranked Alabama clinched the Southeastern Conference Western Division and its third straight trip to the SEC championship game when No. 9 Auburn was upset 13-7 at Georgia.

Top-ranked Alabama clinched the Southeastern Conference Western Division and its third straight trip to the SEC championship game when No. 9 Auburn was upset 13-7 at Georgia. Smart’s Bulldogs gave the Tigers their second conference loss entering the Nov. 26 trip to Tuscaloosa to face unbeaten Alabama.

There was an Alabama theme to Saturday’s upset in Athens. Former Tide defensive back Maurice Smith’s interception return tied the game at 7-7 in the third quarter.

Florida has the inside track to join Alabama in Atlanta for a second straight year. The Gators (7-2, 5-2 SEC) just need to win out as every other Eastern Division team has at least three league losses.

Texas A&M eliminated itself from contention in the West with last week’s second league loss at Mississippi State. LSU also has two SEC losses, including one to Alabama.

No. 1 Alabama (10-0) beat Mississippi State 51-3 for its 22nd straight win. It gets Chattanooga next Saturday before Auburn visits the following Saturday for what is now a slightly anticlimactic Iron Bowl.

Alabama-Chattanooga is set for 6 p.m. CT and will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. A final decision on the carrier will be determined following this weekend’s games.

The Crimson Tide and Mocs will meet for the 13th time in series history, with Alabama holding a 12-0 advantage, including a 7-0 mark in Tuscaloosa. Saban is 2-0 all-time against Chattanooga, with both victories coming as the head coach of the Tide. Alabama defeated Chattanooga, 49-0, in the most recent meeting between the two schools in Tuscaloosa in 2013.
