Syracuse freshman linebacker Malcolm Cater is off the team after being charged in connection with three burglaries that occurred on campus.

The 19-year-old Cater, from Riverhead, N.Y., is charged with three counts of burglary and one count of grand larceny, all felonies, and two counts of petit larceny, both misdemeanors. He was expected to be arraigned Sunday in Syracuse City Court.

Syracuse police charged Cater in connection with two Friday break-ins and a burglary that occurred over Thanksgiving break. Proceeds from the burglaries were found in Cater's apartment, police said.

After being informed of the arrest, head coach Doug Marrone said in a statement that the 6-foot-1, 212-pound Cater, who was in line to take over at middle linebacker next season, was no longer part of the football program.

Cater played in all 12 games this season for the Orange, mostly on special teams, and recorded 13 tackles and one sack. He was listed behind senior middle linebacker Derrell Smith on the depth chart.
