Syracuse Football: The Honeymoon Period is Officially Over
After the Syracuse football team lost their second straight game, most Orange fans came to a realization. The honeymoon period is already over.
This may seem harsh, but it’s true. I get all the issues with the Syracuse football team. They’re painfully obvious to the Orange faithful. We have issues with recruiting, we’re in the blustery north, and we have a track record of losing as of late.
We proposed this question a couple weeks ago, when will the excuses end? They’re legitimate reasons to attribute to the problems with this program. But from all the calls we received on the ESPN Postgame Show and this morning on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, it is clear that the honeymoon period is over.
While some fans are taking it too far with the pitchforks and torches to fire the guy. He does need to be held accountable for his actions. Specifically his game management which has been very much in question.
On top of that conservative play calling continues to hinder this team. They couldn’t adapt to the conditions with Hurricane Matthew. While some fans point to that as to the reason SU lost, that’s ridiculous. Do you know why?
Both teams had to play in the conditions. Weather is the ultimate equalizer in football. Quite simply the Orange just failed to make the necessary changes to get back into the game. Again to reiterate, not advocating for this guy to be fired.
But he needs to fix his game management. Control what you can control in the time being. Babers can’t control the lack of depth, inexperience, or schedule he has to play. But what he can control is effort, situational football, and execution.
Syracuse is (2-4) and this has the feeling of a 2-10 or 3-9 kind of season. The Orange are out-manned, they’re getting out-coached, and they’re getting out-played. Up next for the Orange is a top-25 opponent in Virginia Tech who just lit up UNC.
