Syracuse Football: Hurricane Matthew could impact football game

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Syracuse football team travels to Winston-Salem to play the Demon Deacons on Saturday. Although Hurricane Matthew could have something to say about it.

While the Syracuse (2-3) football team will look to turn things around against Wake Forest (4-1), it may not happen.

We are still a couple days away from kickoff, but early indications suggest that this game will be played on Saturday night. While according to reports, there are several contingency plans in place if Hurricane Matthew shifts its path.

While the eye of the hurricane may not be in Winston-Salem, the elements certainly will. This is going to be the first time we see Dino Babers’ offense face mother nature. There is going to be gusty winds, piling rain, and that could affect the tempo of this Orange offense.

Which should hinder the Orange more so than Wake Forest. While if Syracuse can’t rely on the only positive thus far, their passing offense, things could be tough on Saturday. Coach Babers has said in the past that the element that affects his offense the most is wind. Which there should be plenty of in Week 6.

Which would force the Orange to rely upon their defense and their running game. Two of their more weaker units thus far this season. The running game hasn’t been able to get going regardless of who is in the backfield. While everyone is aware of the defensive deficiencies of this team.

If weather is as much of a factor as many people anticipate, this game could be ugly. A field position battle kind of game with both offenses being rendered ineffective by the elements.

While the best comparison that can be made of Wake Forest for the Orange is that they’re better offensively than UConn, but worse defensively than the Huskies.

While Wake Forest officials will continue to monitor the potential route of Hurricane Matthew in advance of Saturday night’s game against Syracuse.
