S. Carolina reinstates QB Garcia, coach
The University of South Carolina officially reinstated quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus and quarterback Stephen Garcia on Tuesday.
Mangus was suspended without pay last week after he was arrested in Greenville, S.C., for allegedly urinating in the street outside a bar. He was booked on a charge of nuisance conduct and released later in the day on a $470 bond.
"We insist that those in the athletics department who work with our student-athletes on a daily basis are held to a higher standard of conduct," said athletic director Eric Hyman. "G.A.'s lack of judgment did not reflect the character and integrity that we expect from our coaches."
As a condition of his reinstatement, Mangus will forfeit a month's pay, nearly $14,600, and will not be ineligible for a raise or any bonuses over the next year, according to the Post and Courier of Charleston, S.C.
Meanwhile, Garcia, who heads into his senior season as the Gamecocks' starting quarterback, was suspended in April by head coach Steve Spurrier after an outburst at a life skills function mandated by the Southeastern Conference.
It was the fifth time the 23-year-old Garcia had been suspended from the team during his college career. Several of the incidents involved alcohol, including the latest transgression.
Garcia had been reinstated on a probationary basis in June to allow him to join his teammates for voluntary workouts.
"In the last four months, Stephen has done everything we've asked of him," Spurrier said. "He has made a commitment to being a first-class student-athlete, and we expect him to continue to be one throughout the rest of his Gamecock career."
Garcia, the third-ranked passer in school history, quarterbacked the Gamecocks to the SEC East title last season, throwing for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns.
