Report: TCU co-OC is in Austin to talk about joining the Longhorns

The Texas offense could be close to getting a total overhaul.

According to a report by Orangebloods, Texas coach Charlie Strong met with TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie on Sunday in Fort Worth. Strong reportedly offered Cumbie the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach position. The Austin American-Statesman confirmed Monday that Cumbie is now in Austin to meet with Strong again and tour the Longhorns' facilities.

Cumbie and co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham implemented a version of the Air Raid offense at TCU prior to the 2014 season. Immediately, the Horned Frogs' offense became one of the most feared in the nation behind two-time Heisman candidate quarterback Trevone Boykin.

Cumbie also served as the quarterbacks coach at TCU, and played quarterback at Texas Tech under Mike Leach, the man most responsible for transforming the Big 12 into a spread, passing league.

Cumbie served as co-offensive coordinator at Tech before joining TCU.

Horns247 reports that Cumbie could give Texas his answer as early as Monday. The report also said Strong has informed his offensive coaches that he plans to hire an offensive coordinator, and once he does, Texas' other assistant coaches will be allowed to interview for their current positions. According to the report, however, only first-year tight ends coach Jeff Traylor, and first-year wide receivers coach Jay Norvell, who took over the play-calling after Week 1, stand a chance of returning whether Cumbie accepts the job or not.
