Report: Jay Paterno stumped for job on Urban Meyer's Ohio State staff
Jay Paterno, Ohio State assistant?
A letter has surfaced indicating Paterno, the son of the long-time Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, wrote to Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer last winter to express interest in a job on Meyer's staff.
Here is what Paterno wrote, courtesy of PennLive.com:
Although no job is specified, Ohio State had an opening at quarterbacks coach following the departure of Tom Herman, who became the head coach at the University of Houston. The job was eventually filled by Tim Beck, an Ohio native who most recently was offensive coordinator at Nebraska.
It apparently wasn't the only letter Paterno wrote, as similar letters intended for Georgia and West Virginia also surfaced as part of the Paterno family's ongoing lawsuit filed against the NCAA on behalf of the Paterno estate.
Jay Paterno spent nearly two decades on his father's coaching staff, producing mixed results. While he was credited with helping develop dual-threat QB Michael Robinson and lightly recruited Ohio prep quarterback Daryll Clark into Big Ten MVPs, he also oversaw multiple tenures of five-star quarterbacks who never fulfilled the promise they brought with them to campus.
Since his father's tenure came to a controversial end in 2011 as a sexual abuse scandal involving former PSU defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky swept the nation, the younger Paterno has been an outspoken defender of Joe Paterno's legacy, at times with some controversy.
When Joe Paterno passed away in January 2012, Meyer released a statement expressing his respect for the veteran coach.
"He was a man who I have deep respect for as a human being, as a husband and father, as a leader and as a football coach," Meyer said. "I was very fortunate to have been able to develop a personal relationship with him, especially over the course of the last several years, and it is something that I will always cherish."
