Report: Cal, Sonny Dykes have begun negotiating contract extension

Published Nov. 16, 2015 5:04 p.m. ET

After guiding the Bears to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2011, the Cal athletic department announced that it is working on a contract extension for head football coach Sonny Dykes, according to Ryan Gorcey of Scout.com

"Sonny has my full confidence and it is our intention to keep him here," athletic director Mike Williams said in a statement, per Scout. "Three years ago, he took over a program that was not in a good place and in need of significant turnaround and improvement in many areas. Since then, Sonny has done everything we have asked of him. He has turned around football’s academic performance and our student-athletes are doing quite well in the classroom at the world’s No. 3 university. He has changed the culture within the program and it is where it needs to be. And the team’s performance on the field has improved significantly. We have gone from 1 to 5 to 6 wins (and counting) and are now bowl-eligible for the first time since 2011. Sonny is our guy and we plan on him being here."

According to the report, there have been rumors that Dykes wanted out of the Cal football program; however the athletic department denied those rumors earlier this year.
