Penn State's Big Ten Championship Win Puts Pressure on College Football Playoff Committee

Penn State won the Big Ten Championship and now has an argument to make the College Football Playoff.
The College Football Committee likely was rooting against Penn State on Saturday night. However, the Nittany Lions were able to overcome a 21-point deficit and defeat the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten Championship. Now, the College Football Playoff committee has a big debate before it announces the final rankings Sunday afternoon.
In years past, the committee has made it clear that conference championships matter. However, when debating the prospect of Penn State making the final four, that doesn’t seem to hold the same weight. The Nittany Lions seem to be on the outside looking in as it currently stands.
The fact that Penn State went out and won the Big Ten Championship now causes a bit of a conundrum for the committee.
It’s hard to argue against the Big Ten being the best conference this season.
Penn State was able to survive a tough conference schedule and came out as champions of the best conference in the nation. That alone should be enough to propel the Nittany Lions into the College Football Playoff. At the top of the list of Penn State’s accomplishments this season is a victory over No. 2 Ohio State. The Nittany Lions were the only team that beat the Buckeyes this season.

Now, the committee has a tough decision. They must be careful, because the decision that is made could set a dangerous precedent.
Alabama being in seems like a lock, as it should be. Also, Clemson, and even Washington, could be in. All three of those teams are conference champions.
The debate could very well come down to the likes of Penn State and Ohio State.
Ohio State has just one loss and a great resume. However, the Nittany Lions hold both a head- to-head win and a conference championship. Also, Penn State is one of the hottest teams in the nation, having won nine consecutive game.
The decision of the committee certainly won’t be an easy one. They will have to decide how much importance is placed on winning a head-to-head matchup and winning a conference championship.
Based on past practice of selecting a hot team and a conference champion, the Nittany Lions should certainly be in.
