Penn State Football Recruiting Commit Breakdown: TE Zack Kuntz

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

On Saturday afternoon Penn State’s already strong 2018 recruiting class got even better with the addition of tight end Zack Kuntz.

Penn State’s 2018 recruiting class has a fifth member. Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, native Zack Kuntz committed to the Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon. With the commitment of Kuntz, Penn State’s 2018 recruiting class now ranks 4th in the country according to 247 Sports.

247 Sports ranks Zack Kuntz as the top tight end in the country in the 2018 recruiting cycle. Furthermore, they have him as the 50th best player in the entire country for 2018. Kuntz chose the Nittany Lions over schools such as Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Stanford.

The commitment of Zack Kuntz came as a surprise. It did not appear that Kuntz was close to making a decision on which college he would attend. Additionally, Penn State did not appear to be Kuntz’s leader.

Despite being a legacy recruit, both his brothers played at Penn State, it appeared the Nittany Lions were running third for Zack Kuntz. Many people, myself included, thought that Notre Dame and Stanford were the two teams to beat for Kuntz. However, Coach Franklin and company were able to swoop in and land Kuntz.

The six-foot-eight, 218-pound Kuntz is not much of a blocking tight end. His skill set is very similar to that of current Nittany Lion tight end Mike Gesicki. Kuntz is big, fast, athletic, and has great hands. He will be a great weapon in the Nittany Lion offense.

The improved play of the Penn State offense this year undoubtedly played a role in Kuntz’s commitment. The season that Mike Gesicki is having couldn’t have hurt either. This is definitely a player that the Nittany Lions would not have landed without their improved play this season.

With the commitment of Kuntz, the Nittany Lions’ 2018 recruiting class now has two tight ends. Kuntz joins fellow top-100 recruit Pat Freiermuth as a tight end in Penn State’s 2018 recruiting class.

While it is very early, Penn State’s 2018 recruiting class is shaping up to be one of the best in program history. The Nittany Lions already have four top-100 commits, and remain heavily in the mix for multiple other four and five star players. James Franklin has this program trending upward in a big way.
