Nebraska wins on 49-yard Hail Mary
On Nebraska's official athletics Web site, quarterback Ron Kellogg III is scouted like this: "will continue to be a valuable part of Nebraska's quarterback depth chart in 2013."
That, evidently, is code for "will play only when it's time to throw it to the end zone from super far away." How do you like him now?
That's Kellogg completing a 49-yard Hail Mary to redshirt freshman Jordan Westerkamp to beat Northwestern, improve Nebraska's record to 6-2 and possibly even save coach Bo Pelini's job.
Of all people, Ron Kellogg III, son of former all-conference Kansas basketball player Ron Kellogg Jr.
Ron Kellogg III, who walked on to the Nebraska football team from Omaha Westside High School, who redshirted in 2009 and was named scout team MVP, who didn't appear in a game until last year when he threw all of nine pass attempts and wasn't put on scholarship until August. Ron Kellogg III, who came into the season as the third-string quarterback, was backing up Tommy Armstrong Jr. in the absence of the injured starter Taylor Martinez.
But apparently Pelini has said that if the Huskers ever needed to drive the field in the final 2 minutes, Kellogg would be the guy he called on.
The ball traveled 56 yards in the air and got deflected near the goal line, before falling sweetly into the arms of Westerkamp - just like Nebraska drew it up.
"A crazy play," Westerkamp told the Chicago Tribune.
Armstrong was 15 of 29 for 173 yards and a touchdown, but he threw three interceptions. Kellogg was 7 of 13 for 104 yards, with one interception and the winning touchdown.
