Mississippi State vs. LSU: M&WN Staff Picks

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Does Mississippi State have a chance to pull off a win in Baton Rouge this week?

I understand why that sounds like a crazy question to some people. After all, this is the same team the lost to South Alabama just two weeks ago. But in the week since that game it appears things have clicked for the Bulldogs. From Dan Mullen to the key leaders to the up and comers, there seems to be a new found fire within this program.

This is an interesting matchup with LSU, a program that’s in turmoil right now. For the second straight year the Tigers can’t throw the ball. Brandon Harris has been benched and Danny Etling is the new starter. If he can’t bring this offense together the fan base could be calling for Les Miles’ head. The defense has good talent as always and could give State problems. Of course, the key for LSU is Leonard Fournette. He has to carry the offense in order for them then be successful.

Now for the Maroon & White Nation staff picks.

Josh:  I think State has a chance in this game just because LSU has bungled their QBs again and the fanbase is one bad thing happening away from turning their backs. But LSU has so much talent and its in their back yard, this is a tall task. State isn’t as experienced and confident as they were two years ago so I think LSU will win the ball game. 27-10 LSU

Thomas K. Stark:  I really wasn’t expecting a close game against LSU after the South Alabama debacle, but last week’s improvement against South Carolina, plus some shaky QB play by LSU leads me to believe this game could go down to the wire. In the end, LSU’s talent advantage proves to be too much for the Bulldogs. LSU 24, MSU 21.

Dakota Knight: I look for this game to be a defensive slugfest. Both teams have a strong front 7. LSU has QB problems and Fitz will be getting his first road start in one of the most notoriously difficult venues in America. I give LSU the slight edge based on history and the assumption that Leonard Fournette will play. I could see this one going either way. About the only thing that would shock me is if the Dawgs pull a 2014 and blowout the Tigahs. LSU 27 State 24

Andrew: I think this game will actually be determined by Mother Nature. I think we have a few early lightning delays that will take the crowd out of the game early. Fournette will be the key cog in LSU’s game. If our run defense fails to make an impact in the run game, which would be uncharacteristic for them, then we lose handily.

I think we see a close game with a Bulldog loss of 24-17 in Death Valley.

Jared: It’s crazy to think that MSU has a chance after the way the season started but I think they do. I think this will be a defensive battle with both offenses hitting a few big plays. Ultimately, LSU is more talented and wins this one 24-21.
