MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner has undergone surgery on his left foot, requiring a four-month recovery that will limit him in spring practices.

The university announced Wednesday that Leidner's procedure went as planned.

Leidner did not miss any games this year. He had 2,701 yards passing for the fourth-most in a single season in Gophers history, and ecame the second quarterback in the program to notch at least 250 yards in four straight games.

The Gophers also announced Wednesday that three players, running back Berkley Edwards, wide receiver Desmond Gant and cornerback Craig James, have been granted their release from the program. Coach Tracy Claeys said James wants to be closer to family in Illinois, Gant is seeking more playing time and Edwards will pursue his track career full time.
