Key Big Ten Games Week 10: Effect on the Conference

This Saturday there were three Big Ten games of interest that we will focus on. Wisconsin travelled to Evanston, IL to take on Northwestern and finally get a win there – the first since 1999.

In the mid-day game, a 8-0 Michigan team again showed us why they are considered Big Ten royalty by blowing out a decent Maryland team. The big surprise came in the primetime match-up where a 7-1 Nebraska went into Columbus, OH to take on a 7-1 Ohio State team and were completely dominated.

Big Ten football Game #1:

Final: Wisconsin 21   Northwestern 7

The Wisconsin Badgers went on the road to continue their winning season versus the up-and-coming Northwestern Wildcats.

In a game that was considered a “get this monkey off our back” game for Wisconsin, the Badgers finally lifted the “curse” that kept them from winning against the Wildcats on the road.

Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst had his offense, and especially the ground game well prepared as his team ran for a combined 190 rushing yards.

Their offense dominated the time of possession, amassing 40 minutes, 25 seconds. It would account for two-thirds of the game that left Northwestern’s defense spent by the end of the game.

At the half, the Badgers led 10-7. Wisconsin’s lone 1st half touchdown was off an end-around by redshirt junior wideout Jazz Peavy, who proceeded to run across the field for a 46-yard touchdown to give the Badgers a 10-point lead. But the Wildcats managed a eight-play 87 yard touchdown drive, cutting the lead to 3 at the half.

In the second half, Wisconsin managed 11 points on a field-goal, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion.

The Badgers’ defense dominated the 2nd half, shutting down the Wildcats’ offense. Northwestern converted only five-of-18 third downs throughout the game.

Wisconsin hosts the Illinois Fighting Illini next Saturday at 3:30 EST.

Final: Michigan 59   Maryland 3

The Michigan Wolverines hosted the Maryland Terrapins in Ann Arbor, MI in a mid-day match-up that was bound to showcase head coach Jim Harbaugh’s undefeated team.

And showcase it they did. The team dominated from beginning to end allowing the Terps just 78 yards of rushing offense.

The Wolverines also dominated the game offensively, with Wilton Speight’s career day, in which he was 19-of-24 for 362 yards and two touchdowns that gained a total of 660 yards. Speight also had a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

The game was effectively over in the 2nd quarter. Another dominant performance and the No.3 ranked Wolverines remain undefeated.

Final: Ohio State 62   Nebraska 3

In a seemingly competitive matchup of two highly ranked Big Ten teams, the Nebraska Cornhuskers went on the road to play the Ohio State Buckeyes.

It was expected to be a highly competitive game between two Top 10 ranked Big Ten teams. But what happened was not at all expected.

On Nebraska’s first offensive possession – just 1:34 into the 1st quarter, Ohio State cornerback Damon Webb intercepted a Tommy Armstrong pass and ran it back for the then fifth pick-6 for the Buckeyes defense this season.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Huskers drove the ball the length of the field but were held to a Drew Brown 20-yard field goal – their best possession and only score of the night.

Nebraska head coach Mike Riley thought he had a good game plan going into Columbus, OH to battle the Buckeyes and their head coach Urban Meyer.

This time Meyer was ready for them and had a few offensive “wrinkles” up his sleeve.

With 6:03 left in the 2nd quarter Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong was tackled near the sideline by Buckeyes safety Malik Hooker and appeared to be knocked-out.

He was strapped to a board for his safety and taken immediately to a Columbus-area hospital where any spinal injury was ruled out. He returned to root his team on in the 2nd half, apparently feeling much better.

Both teams found it hard to play the first few snaps after what appeared to be a bad injury.

But Ohio State continued their dominance in the game and safety Malik Hooker intercepted the Nebraska quarterback Ryker Fyfe’s pass for the second pick-6 of the game – a Buckeyes record-setting sixth pick-6 of the season.

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett showed the masses that he still has his confidence and had a very good night, throwing 4 touchdowns on 26/38 passing with no interceptions.

Ohio State faces a Maryland Terrapins team next Saturday in College Park, MD in a 3:30 game.
