J.T. Barrett represents Ohio State on early Heisman odds list

Published Jan. 19, 2016 4:10 p.m. ET

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett is among the early top five favorites for the 2016 Heisman Trophy.

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson is No. 1 with odds of 9/2 while LSU running back Leonard Fournette and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey are at 5/1.

Barrett and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield are next at 10/1.

Barrett, a junior from Texas, is set to be Ohio State's full-time starter in 2016 after beginning last season as the backup to Cardale Jones.

The last time Barrett was the Buckeyes' starter for the majority of a regular season (2014) he set a Big Ten record for touchdowns accounted for and finished fifth in the Heisman balloting.

Barrett could be in line to produce big numbers this fall as he will be by far the most established weapon in Urban Meyer's spread offense, which tends to produce big numbers for quarterbacks anyway.

Ohio State has had one Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback, Troy Smith. He won the award in 2006.

The Buckeyes are tied with Notre Dame and USC for the most Heismans (seven).
