Is QB job really up for grabs at Texas A&M?

Published Aug. 11, 2015 2:27 p.m. ET

There's a nominal quarterback competition going on at Texas A&M, which opened camp Sunday.

While pretty much everyone expects returning sophomore starter Kyle Allen -- who completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,322 yards with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions last year in about a half-season's worth of play -- to retain the job, coach Kevin Sumlin has publicly stated that it's an open competition.

That might seem unusual given what Allen, the top-ranked quarterback in the 2014 recruiting class, showed last season. But Allen might not even be the most talented QB on the roster; the Aggies in February signed in-state five-star Kyler Murray, who had a legendary high school career in which he went 42-0 while leading Allen High to three straight state titles. Juco transfer Jake Hubenak, a former walk-on at Oklahoma State, also is in the mix.

According to ESPN, all three quarterbacks have been getting snaps in both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, reaffirming Sumlin's stance on competition.

And after some of those early drills, Sumlin told ESPN the following:

"Obviously Kyle came back doing things well. Kyler has picked it up really well. Jake, I think he benefits from being at Oklahoma State a little bit -- just from a structural standpoint, he understands it.

"Those guys came in and really didn't make too many mistakes from an operational standpoint, if any. The competition is pretty good."

While the validity of the competition is up for debate, there will be plenty of attention paid to it over the coming weeks, especially in regards to Allen and Murray. And in case you're particularly interested in comparing the two, ESPN provided some gratuitous video of the talented QBs in camp drills:
