Howard rallies to beat Norfolk State 33-28
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) Kalen Johnson threw two touchdown passes, Anthony Philyaw and Da'Vaun Johnson each ran for TDs and Howard scored 21 second-half points to rally past Norfolk State 33-28 on Saturday for its first win of the season.
Johnson scored the go-ahead TD on a 1-yard run in the third quarter after Philyaw's 1-yard run drew the Bison (1-4, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic) within 21-18.
The Spartans (1-4, 0-2) outgained Howard 474-296 and led 21-12 at halftime after Greg Hankerson ran 9 yards for a score and threw TD passes to Marcus Taylor and George Wahee.
Bo Lomax returned a blocked punt 8 yards for the Bison's first score and Johnson hit Kyle Anthony on an 11-yard TD pass before the half. Johnson finished 25 of 36 for 366 yards passing and iced the game in the fourth quarter with an 8-yard TD pass to Anthony.
Hankerson scored late in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run.
