Howard 34, Savannah St. 14
Behind dynamic freshman quarterback Greg McGhee, Howard overcame an early 7-0 deficit to easily defeat Savannah State 34-14 Saturday night and end a 29-game losing streak in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bison (2-3, 1-3) won a MEAC game for the first time since the 2007 season.
McGhee was spectacular. The freshman from Pittsburgh passed for three touchdowns in the second quarter after Savannah State (1-4, 1-2) had taken a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on an Alfred Defillippis 15-yard scoring pass to Darren Hunter. McGhee hit Willie Carter for a 69-yard touchdown to open the second quarter and again later in the quarter as Howard led 20-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, McGhee ran for a 57-yard score. That, coupled with Terrance Leffall's 98 yards rushing and Andra Williams' 67-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, enabled Howard to rush for a season-high 224 yards.
