Hodges throws 5 TDs, Samford handles VMI 55-21

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Devlin Hodges tied a career high with five touchdown passes, Karel Hamilton and Emmanuel Obajimi both had more than 100 yards receiving, and Samford pummeled VMI 55-21 on Saturday.

Hodges, who sat toward the end of the fourth quarter, set a career mark with 435 yards passing. The sophomore had 300 yards and four TDs at halftime. He completed 35 of 50 passes with an interception.

Kelvin McKnight caught a 9-yard TD pass from Hodges on Samford's opening drive. On the next possession, Deion Pierre returned an interception 21 yards to put Samford up 14-0. VMI's Alex Keys halved the deficit with a 7-yard touchdown, but Hodges threw scoring passes to McKnight and Obajimi to give the Bulldogs a 28-7 lead after one quarter.

Keys scored again for the Keydets in the second quarter.

Pete Reed's 19-yard run midway through the third quarter cut Samford's lead to 38-21, but the Bulldogs outscored VMI 17-0 in the final period.
