Franklin sees different Penn State team during second camp as head coach

Penn State football coach James Franklin often seems to carry with him a certain confident air, but that was especially true as he met with reporters earlier this week in State College

The source was the knowledge how much has changed for his Nittany Lions in his second season as head coach compared to the first.

“Our D-line just looks differently," Franklin said. "You look at our safeties, they look differently. You look at the wide receivers, the whole group has improved. Their bodies, their movement, their athleticism, their understanding. They just look like a different team right now. We’ve still got a lot of improvement to do, don’t get me wrong, but I’m really pleased with that progress the guys have made.”

Franklin opened spring and preseason press conferences with much the same type of message, and he does not seem to have encountered anything during preseason camp to change his mind.

The Nittany Lions return seven starters on offense and seven starters on defense while also adding a highly regarded recruiting class from which there could be a dozen or more contributors this fall.

A large number of redshirt freshmen also joined the fray this offseason, greatly increasing the competitiveness in practice for Penn State.

How many wins will that equal?

Those answers start coming in Sept. 5 when the Nittany Lions play Temple in Philadelphia.
