Florida WR Rick Wells signs deferred prosecution agreement

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Florida receiver Rick Wells has signed a deferred prosecution agreement with the State Attorney's Office, meaning he can avoid a conviction on his record if he meets a number of conditions.

Wells and fellow freshman Tyrie Cleveland were arrested in July for firing BB guns into an on-campus residence hall. The charge was reduced Tuesday from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Cleveland is not eligible for deferred prosecution because of a past shoplifting charge in Houston. Cleveland has a Sept. 22 court date, where he is expected to accept a plea deal.

Wells must pay $979.80 in restitution, pay $100 in prosecution costs, and donate $150 to a child advocacy center or perform 12 hours of community service. If he completes those in six months, the criminal mischief charge will be dismissed.

Cleveland is expected to get similar sanctions.
