Florida Gators Recruiting: Shawn Davis Expects To Make Immediate Impact
Shawn Davis is an early enrollee to the University of Florida. He expects to make an early impact on defense for the Florida Gators football team.
The Florida Gators have been one of the most dominant defensive teams in the country in 2016. Despite enduring an overwhelming slew of injuries, the Gators rank in the Top 10 in both points and yards allowed per game.
One of the recruits who projects to help the Gators continue to dominate on the defensive side of the ball is Shawn Davis.
Davis is listed as a cornerback, but Florida expects to utilize him in multiple phases on defense. He’s been told that he’ll rotate at corner, nickel, and safety, which is intriguing versatility for any incoming player.
According to Ryan Young of SEC Country, head coach Jim McElwain has informed Davis that he wants him to come in and play right away.
“His vibe. He has a real good vibe. He’s a humble coach and he’s going to stand up for his team,” Davis said. “I really like his vibe. He’s an honest coach and he gives everybody a chance to prove what they can do on the field. I talk to coach Mac a lot, and he tells me the truth. Before I even committed, he told me, ‘I’m going to make you a Gator.’ Before I even had the offer, he was like, ‘You’re going to be a Gator.’ He want(s) me to come in and play right away.”
Florida could lose a number of high-profile players on defense, but that would still be quite the feat for a freshman to come in and play high snap counts in the SEC.
Starting cornerbacks Teez Tabor and Quincy Wilson could both come off the board in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Losing both of those players would be an undeniable setback for the Gators’ defense.
To add a versatile defensive back to the mix would be an excellent way for the Gators to prepare for this potential setback.
Davis is ranked No. 259 overall on the ESPN 300, which provides insight into what makes him such an intriguing acquisition. If he works hard enough, he should be able to play during his first season and provide a quality impact at multiple positions.
Davis expressed just how excited he is to do so.
“When they make a pick or a pick six, I just imagine, I get that rush in my body, to feel like I’m going to be that person next, doing this and making this happen at Florida.”
It’s hard not to be excited about a player who aspires for greatness.
Davis has been anticipating a career with the Gators for quite some time. It’s soon to arrive.
