Due to misses in recruiting, walk-ons playing pivotal roles for South Carolina
The Gamecocks are preparing to face No. 7 Georgia in Athens on Saturday. A loss in this contest would drop South Carolina to 1-2 overall, and 0-2 in conference play. There's no question it's a big game for Spurrier's team. With the hopes of defeating the Bulldogs for the fifth time in six seasons, "The Ol' Ball Coach" will be relying upon a number of walk-ons littered throughout his depth chart.
In Tuesday's press conference, Spurrier admitted misses in recruiting have led to a reliance upon non-scholarship players. This includes at quarterback with Perry Orth, among other positions.
"Yeah, the scholarship players have not been quite the hit that we thought they were going to be," said Spurrier. "But again, we give everybody a chance and sometimes these walk-on players, I don't know if they work a little harder or are out to prove more, but it has turned out over the years I've had a lot of good walk-on players."
A true dichotomy exists with this premise.
On the one hand, it speaks to Spurrier's development of non-scholarship athletes. It also illustrates his ability to integrate them into significant spots.
On the other hand, South Carolina is a proud SEC program. It shouldn't have to rely upon an extensive amount of walk-ons to be playing big minutes. This could lead to a questioning of Spurrier's evaluation skills from a recruiting standpoint.
