Nick Elko scored two touchdowns to lead Delaware State past Virginia Military Institute 17-10 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Elko's 26-yard touchdown pass to Travis Tarpley with 42 seconds left in the second quarter gave Delaware State a 10-0 lead at halftime.

VMI cut the lead to 10-7 late in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by David Turner.

The Keydets tied the game at 10 with 2:35 seconds left behind Jeff Sexton's 22-yard FG.

With 45 seconds remaining in the game, Elko ended a nine-play 55-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run giving the Hornets the lead for good.

Turner led VMI with 101 yards rushing on 23 carries. But VMI could not overcome four turnovers - three fumbles and an interception.

Delaware State defeated VMI 24-21 last season in the teams' first meeting.
