Conflicting reports on whether Houston has hired Lane Kiffin

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Houston is set to hire Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to be its next football coach, USA Today's Dan Wolken reports..

According to the report, the hire is dependent on Kiffin meeting with school officials on Thursday, but Kiffin "has been operating" as if he will be the school's next football coach.

The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Houston has not offered job to anyone and no decision has been made on its next head coach. Fox Sports reporter Bruce Feldman is also reporting that Houston still hasn't made a decision.

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, Houston offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Major Applewhite and interim head coach Todd Orlando were also candidates for the job, according to reports.

If Houston decides to make the hire, this will be Kiffin's third college job. Kiffin would replace Tom Herman, who left the school after two seasons to become the head coach at Texas.

Kiffin has a record of 35–21 as a collegiate head coach at Tennessee and USC. He has been Alabama offensive coordinator since the 2014 season.

Before landing at Alabama, Kiffin, 41, was USC's head coach for four seasons before being fired five games into the 2013 season after a blowout loss at Arizona State.

He was also the Oakland Raiders head coach during the 2007–2008 seasons, posting a 5–15 record and spent one season at Tennessee in 2009.
