Columnist: USC let Sarkisian off easy with apology, no suspension
Some reportedly have called for Steve Sarkisian's firing after a drunken episode over the weekend.
Others wonder why at least a suspension wasn't handed down. Count on Jeff Miller at The Orange County Register among those. Miller writes that USC dropped the ball letting Sarkisian off the hook with a simple apology. And Miller is baffled.
"How Sarkisian is allowed to continue coaching without interruption after his drunken, profane and nationally embarrassing public performance Saturday is almost as unconscionable as Sarkisian putting himself in this spot in the first place," writes Miller. "Evidently, the highest-paid and highest-profile educator at this particular institution of higher education is above something as low as a suspension. Even if one is entirely appropriate."
And he wasn't done. He also went after USC athletic director Pat Haden.
"USC athletic director Pat Haden is recognized as one of the great thinkers of all sports," Miller writes. "I have no idea what he's thinking here. Sarkisian earned a forced leave -- at least some practice time if not the season opener -- based solely on a lack of judgment that would have been alarming even if he weren't entrusted with the assignment of leading young men."
