College football odds Week 1: How to bet Utah State-Alabama, pick

Updated Sep. 3, 2022 2:17 p.m. ET

Some bettors are very vested in the Utah State Aggies at Alabama Crimson Tide game on Saturday night.

Those gamblers took a flyer on the Aggies upsetting Nick Saban's Crimson Tide, then running the table in the Mountain West Conference to position Utah State for a College Football Playoff bid. The early Utah State bettors stand to win $1 million (on a $1,000 bet) if the Aggies claim the natty.

Here's everything you need from a betting perspective on the Utah State-Alabama game, from the point spread, moneyline and total over/under (odds via FOX Bet):

Utah State @ No. 1 Alabama (7:30. ET Saturday, SECN)

Point spread: Alabama -42 (Alabama favored to win by more than 42 points, otherwise Utah State covers)
Moneyline: No line available
Total scoring over/under: 62 points scored by both teams combined

Utah State (1-0) overcame a two-game skid early in the season to win the Mountain West Conference and the SoFi Bowl to finish 11-3 and No. 24 in the country.

Alabama was 13-2 in 2021, finishing second in the CFP behind the Georgia Bulldogs. The Crimson Tide have won 20 consecutive season openers.

Alabama won the only meeting between the schools 48-17 in 2004.

The Aggies are 1-18 against the SEC, with their lone win coming against Kentucky in 1970.

Joel Klatt gives his preseason Top 10 and sleeper teams of this upcoming College Football season.

Utah State has won 39 of its past 48 games when it has a 100-yard rusher and 45 of its past 51 games when rushing at least 40 times in a game.

Nick Saban is 14-0 straight up (SU) and 12-2 against the spread (ATS) at Alabama. When favored by 30 or more points in its opener under Saban, Alabama is 3-0 SU and ATS.

The Tide returns quarterback Bryce Young, who is attempting to become the first repeat Heisman Trophy winner since Ohio State's Archie Griffin in 1974-75. Young is the second betting favorite (+350 at FOX Bet, bet $10 to win $45 total) to win the Heisman this season.

Pick via FOX Sports analyst Jason McIntyre:

"Utah State spotted lowly UConn a 14-0 first quarter last week in its opener, but peeled off 24 straight points and won, 31-20. The Aggies didn't come close to covering the 24-point spread, and worse yet, gave up 245 yards on the ground – 6.3 yards per carry.

"Now they travel to Alabama and face sleeper Heisman candidate Jahmyr Gibbs (+5000 at FOX Bet, bet $10 to win $510 total), the transfer running back from Georgia Tech. We know Utah State won't win. Will it cover?

"I'd rather not have to watch the fourth quarter to find out, but the Aggies did go 10-4 ATS last season. With Alabama playing Texas next week, expect Nick Saban to race out to an early lead, and the entire fourth quarter might be backups.

If you're betting this game, the angle I'd take here is Alabama first half -27.5."

PICK: Alabama (-27.5 at FOX Bet) to cover in the first half
