Cal asked NCAA to count win vs. Grambling State for bowl eligibility
Cal has asked the NCAA's Football Oversight Committee to validate its season-opening victory over Grambling State. After the Bears learned that the win might not count towards its bowl eligibility due to an issue regarding a scholarship requirement, Cal filed the claim with the NCAA.
The waiver is considered to be a formality, and Cal said in a statement on Tuesday that it was confident that the win would be validated.
The NCAA requires that a FBS school have a waiver to count a victory over an FCS opponent if the FCS team hadn’t awarded at least 90 percent, on average, of the 63 scholarships allowed over a two-year period.
Cal learned within “the past 72 hours” that there were questions whether Grambling State met that scholarship requirement, per USA Today.
Cal currently sits at six wins this season, meaning it is bowl eligible. However, if the win against Grambling State isn't counted, the Bears would need to beat Arizona State on Saturday to qualify for its first bowl since 2011.
