BYU Cougar offense to feature new wrinkles after bye week

Published Nov. 5, 2015 10:17 a.m. ET

BYU is fresh off a bye week, and with an extra week to prepare, it's fair to expect that an offensive will put in some new wrinkles.

But wide receiver Mitch Mathews has a word to the wise: don't expect too much razzle-dazzle. BYU plays a fun brand of football, but expect craziness and you'll probably come away disappointed as a BYU fan.

"It's not Boise State-type," Mathews said. "It's not trick plays or anything. It's just time to dig deeper, back to fall camp, previous games, previous years even. It's plays that we know will work. We're a very big percentage team. I think that is effective for us and we'll keep it that way."

With that said, expect to see the playbook open up a bit for starting QB Tanner Mangum now that he's had some time to be entrenched as 'the guy.'

"It's step by step," Mendenhall said. "(Freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum) is already playing really well in the schemes we've given him. We're hesitant to make too big of a jump but there are a few compliments we can add."
