Boxrucker scores twice; Valparaiso holds off Davidson, 24-20

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) Jarrett Morgan rushed for 108 yards on 25 carries and Cody Boxrucker pounded in for a pair of touchdowns as Valparaiso held off Davidson, 24-20 in the Pioneer League opener for both schools Saturday.

Trevor Smith kicked first-quarter field goals of 39- and 35-yards and Taylor Mitchell hit Cam Cheuvront with a 60-yard touchdown pass to stake Davidson (2-2, 0-1) to a 13-7 lead in the second quarter.

Boxrucker scored from 4 yards out and Jake Simpson kicked a 33-yard field goal to give the Crusaders (2-2, 1-0) a 17-13 lead at intermission and Valparaiso never trailed in the second half. Boxrucker capped a seven-play, 60-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 24-13.

Mitchell hit Cheuvront with a 6-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to create the final margin.

Mitchell finished 18 of 31 for 203 yards and two touchdowns to lead Davidson.
