Virginia Tech Basketball: 2017 point guard Wabissa Bede commits to Hokies
Virginia Tech basketball lands their second recruit in the class of 2017 on Wednesday.
Head coach Buzz Williams continues his upward trend with the Virginia Tech Hokies, as the third year head coach added the program’s second commitment in the class of 2017.
Four-star 6’1″ point guard Wabissa Bede chose the Hokies over La Salle, UMass, Butler and Minnesota on Wednesday. Bede, who played his high school basketball at Cushing Academy and is a native of North Andover, MA, is ranked 87th in ESPN’s top 100 for the class of 2017 and is labeled as the third best player in the state of Massachusetts.

Bede had a breakout summer with his AAU team, the Mass Rivals. The point guard combined with UConn commit Makai Ashton-Langford to lead the Rivals to a 21-0 record and four tournament titles throughout the AAU season.
The point guard has impressive physical tools, as he uses his long arms, sturdy frame and massive hands to play with toughness on both ends of the floor. Bede is a legitimate perimeter defender because of his lateral quickness and ability to get into passing lanes.
Offensively, Bede can play both on or off the ball. However, he is best suited to play the point guard position due to leadership skills, high basketball IQ and vision. He is unselfish with the ball in his hands and finds open teammates after penetrating into the lane.
While Bede could improve as both a consistent outside shooter and ball handler, his competitive fire and heart makes him the perfect fit alongside his head coach.
Bede joins ESPN top 100 and four-star shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker in the Hokies’ 2017 recruiting class. With Seth Allen graduating, Bede and Alexander-Walker are likely to contribute immediate minutes off the bench as backups for Justin Robinson, Ahmed Hill, Devin Wilson and Justin Bibbs.
Virginia Tech will be a major factor in the ACC in 2016-17 and Williams’ recruiting additions are just another sign that this program is likely to have sustained success moving forward.
