UMass to wear throwback jerseys to honor Calipari, 1996 team on Wednesday
UMass is honoring former head coach John Calipari and the rest of the 1996 Final Four team on Wednesday night during the Minutemen's game against New Orleans.
The ceremony will include the school retiring a jersey in honor of Coach Cal, who put the national spotlight on the program during his tenure (1988-96).
For the occasion, the Minutemen will wear throwback uniforms with the old UMass lettering.
The decision to honor Calipari and '96 team has been a controversial one. The Final Four was vacated, and while UMass fans and alumni cherish that era of the program's history, some have called for the ceremony to be axed. On Tuesday, Calipari cut an interview with a Boston radio station short after repeated questions about whether he did or didn't know about any wrongdoing during that time.
