AMHERST, Mass. (AP) Trey Davis scored 10 straight points for Massachusetts to rally the Minutemen to an 85-79 victory over Howard in a season opener on Saturday.

Davis and Jabarie Hinds scored 19 points apiece. Donte Clark added 16, Zach Coleman 13 and Seth Berger 10.

Five points from James Daniel and a dunk from James Miller had Howard in front 54-40 with 16:56 to go. But a nearly five-minute drought for Howard gave UMass the opportunity to start cutting into the lead. With 2:35 left and UMass trailing by three, Davis made seven free throws and a 3-pointer for an 83-79 advantage with 34 seconds to go. Hinds added two more free throws with seven seconds remaining.

Daniel scored 30 points and Miller, who fouled out, 27 for the Bison. Marcel Boyd grabbed 11 rebounds.
