Texas A&M beats Texas A&M-Corpus Christie 95-68
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Tonny Trocha-Morelos scored a career-high 15 points for Texas A&M as the Aggies defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 95-68 on Thursday night.
Trocha-Morelos, a sophomore, opened with 6-of 6-shooting, including three 3-pointers. Tyler Davis added 16 points and eight rebounds while fellow freshman DJ Hogg scored 14 points. Danuel House finished with 13 points.
Bryce Douvier led the Islanders (1-1) with 28 points, Including 17 of the Islanders' 34 first-half points. The Aggies led 47-34 at the break.
Douvier also led the Islanders in rebounding with nine.
Following a career-high 30-point performance to open the season, Rashawn Thomas picked up four fouls - including a technical - before heading to the Islanders bench with five minutes to play in the first half. Thomas finished with eight points.
The Aggies (3-0) opened the game with a 9-0 run and never trailed.
Leading by as many as 31, the Aggies shot 31 of 57 of the floor for 54 percent. The Islanders managed 40 percent shooting on 23 of 58, including 29 points from the bench.
The Islanders missed shots early, and the absence of Thomas on the inside allowed for the Aggies to develop a presence inside. The Aggies outscored the Islanders 42-28 in the paint.
The Aggies held only a 9-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, but were able to score 17 second-chance points to the Islanders' eight.
Both teams found success at the free-throw line. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi made 18 of 20 while Texas A&M went 24 of 26.
The self-proclaimed ''Fab 4'' freshman of Hogg, Davis, Admon Gilder and Elijah Thomas combined for 40 points in the game, including six for Gilder and four for Thomas.
Off the bench, Joe Kilgore led all Islanders with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Outside of Douvier with 28, Texas A&M Corpus Christi starters accounted for just 13 points.
The Aggies led in bench scoring 38-29 with Hogg leading all scorers.
The Aggies were credited with a few of their 22 assists by way of the alley-oop, causing a Reed Arena crowd of 5,392 to erupt.
