Quadree Smith's long basketball journey ends with late commitment to Providence

Published Jun. 17, 2015 11:40 p.m. ET

Big East newcomer Quadree Smith is familiar with black and blue territory. He hails from the Washington D.C. area, but for a while, the Villanovas and Georgetowns of the world weren't calling.

Just recently, he had visited South Alabama, and also considered scholarship offers from mid-major programs like Cleveland State, East Tennessee State and Bowling Green.

But none of them felt right for Smith. Then, the college basketball transfer market worked its magic. Providence big man Paschal Chukwu unexpectedly transferred, and suddenly, Ed Cooley had an open scholarship.

When the Friars called, Smith and Cooley knew the bruiser was a fit. Now, it's up to Smith to make the most of his surprise opportunity. Read more about his story in the Washington Post.
