Kentucky Basketball: P.J. Washington Makes Official Visit To Lexington

Kentucky basketball landed the first official visit from Top 15 recruit P.J. Washington. It’s not just John Calipari who could bring him to Lexington.
John Calipari has forever changed the way that schools recruit players. There’s no limit to the number of top prospects Calipari routinely succeeds in bringing to the Kentucky basketball program on a yearly basis.
Though five-star recruit P.J. Washington hasn’t yet made a decision on which school he’ll attend, he made sure a trip to Kentucky was his first official visit.
Washington is a 6’7.5″ and 240-pound power forward with a 7’1.5″ wingspan from Frisco, Texas. He’s a versatile scoring threat with defensive potential as a shot-blocker and on-ball defender.
According to Ben Roberts of The Herald-Leader, Washington made a trip to Lexington his first official visit.
P.J. Washington — a 6-foot-8 forward from Texas, now entering his senior year at Findlay Prep (Nev.) — is scheduled to arrive in Lexington on Friday for the first official visit of his recruitment.
That’s a very promising sign for the Wildcats of Kentucky.
Washington has Kentucky roots and a close relationship with assistant coach Kenny Payne. Washington’s father, Paul, has likened Payne to a family member.
Thus, while it’s Calipari who traditionally leads the recruiting hunt, it’s Payne who may bring Washington to Lexington.
The Wildcats will have significant competition in the pursuit of Washington’s services. He’s received scholarship offers from major programs including the Arizona Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, North Carolina Tar Heels, Texas Longhorns, and UCLA Bruins.
A five-star recruit, it’s safe to believe recruiting Washington will be near the top of every one of those program’s list of priorities.
ESPN has Washington ranked as the No. 16 overall player and the No. 2 power forward in the 2017 class of recruits. Scout has Washington as the No. 14 overall recruit, 247Sports has him at No. 15, and Rivals has him at No. 17.
Simply put, Washington is one of the most highly-touted recruits in the country.
Calipari and Payne could bring him to Lexington in 2017-18.
