Former Spartan Mateen Cleaves' sexual assault charges dismissed by judge

Former Michigan State basketball star Mateen Cleaves’ sexual assault charges were dismissed on Monday.
News broke on Monday afternoon that sexual assault charges against former Michigan State basketball star Mateen Cleaves were dismissed.
The 39-year-old former Spartan led Michigan State to a national title in 2000, but this is easily the darkest moment of his lifetime. Refraining from giving any opinion on the matter, we will present just the facts from the trial and outcome.
According to Gina Damron of the Detroit Free Press, Judge Cathy Dowd found no probable cause to bind the case over for trial.
Cleaves, 39, of Grand Blanc, had been accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a Flint-area motel in 2015.
He was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count each of unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to commit sexual penetration and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Cleaves’ attorney, Frank Manley, said the case “doesn’t add up” and said: “This didn’t happen the way it’s put forward.” He argued that there was no assault and there wasn’t enough on the record to send the case to trial.
Moreover, according to Mike Martindale of The Detroit News, the woman claimed she was never harmed. More details of the case opened up, allowing the charges to be dismissed.
On the stand Monday was Mundy Township police Sgt. Todd Johnson who on Friday said the alleged victim told him she had not been raped. Johnson said he was one of four officers to answer a call of “trouble” at the motel in the early morning hours of Sept. 15, 2015. Johnson said he asked the woman about being physically hurt or assaulted she told him “no,” that she had not been.
Cleaves will avoid any jail time.
