Florida center Egbunu out for season with knee injury

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:24 p.m. ET

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Florida center John Egbunu will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at Auburn.

Egbunu, a 6-foot-11 redshirt junior from Nigeria, injured his knee in the first half of No. 15 Florida's seventh straight victory Tuesday night. Tests Wednesday revealed the extent of the injury. Florida says his recovery time is projected at 10 to 12 months.

Coach Mike White says ''we're all disappointed for John. He's been playing really well of late, so it's a tough blow to him and our team.''

Egbunu averaged 7.8 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds this season. Sophomore Kevarrius Hayes is expected to step into his starting spot.

Adding to Florida's injury concerns, freshman center Gorjok Gak sprained his left foot in practice Monday and could miss up to two weeks.
