Impact Hughes came on for the final 13 minutes of the September 12 loss to Ipswich Town, one of his two involvements across Palace's first five league matches of 2026/27. He was left out of the matchday squad entirely for the scoreless draw at Leeds United on September 20. New manager Pierre Sage has options in the middle of the park with Adam Wharton, Daichi Kamada, Quinten Timber, Jefferson Lerma and Cheick Doucoure, leaving Hughes seventh on the club's own midfield depth chart. At 31 years old, he profiles purely as rotation and injury cover, and his minutes should stay sparse barring a run of absences ahead of him.

Hughes attempted four shots, a season high for the midfielder after contributing to 10 shots across 16 games prior to that outing.
