GAME LOG

Ready for new season Buchanan is back with Villarreal and ready for the new season, according to the club.
Impact Buchanan finished last season with seven goals and one assist across 34 LaLiga games, including a hat trick against Girona that made him the first Canadian to score three goals in a single LaLiga match, having joined Villarreal from Inter Milan last summer. He struggled to have a major impact at the World Cup, managing just three shots on target and no goal contributions across Canada's journey, but his return to club training now shifts the focus toward building on last season's breakout campaign heading into the new LaLiga season under new coach Inigo Perez.
5 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Sends two crosses in loss Buchanan recorded one shot (one on goal) and two crosses (zero accurate) in Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Morocco.
Impact Buchanan did what he could on the right side of the attack for Canada, but he was unable to make a big impact while losing several duels against Noussair Mazraoui. The speedy winger started every game for Canada at the World Cup, but he was disappointing in terms of productivity. Despite having tons of experience in Europe, he didn't record a single goal or assist.
JULY 4 • ROTOWIRE
75 minutes against South Africa Buchanan had one shot (one on goal) in Sunday's 1-0 victory against South Africa.
Impact Buchanan would start once again, starting all four games for Canada at the 2026 World Cup. He would see one chance on net and completed a few passes, but didn't see too much action. He should continue to start as they head into the round of 16.
JUNE 28 • ROTOWIRE
Busy game without a goal Buchanan had four shots (one on goal), 10 crosses (three accurate) and one corner in Thursday's 6-0 win against Qatar.
Impact Buchanon took four shots but was unable to find the back of the net as Canada defeated Qatar 6-0. He was still heavily involved in the game. It was his powerful shot that was returned to Jonathan David, which allowed him to score and put Canada 2-0 ahead. One of his four shots was also cleared off the line in the first half and was fouled as the final man on his way towards the box, which meant that the Qatari defender get sent off.
JUNE 19 • ROTOWIRE
Three crosses on the wing Buchanan recorded three crosses (zero accurate) and one tackle in Friday's 1-1 draw versus Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Impact Buchanan sent in three crosses, though none were accurate during the group stage opener. The midfielder also added a defensive contribution with a tackle, but on the whole wasn't overly involved. It was a tough, cagey match and the pacey winger just couldn't get involved in the attack as often as he would have liked. In a group of largely defensive teams Buchanan's impact could be limited.

Alphonso Davies Named To Canada's World Cup Squad Despite Hamstring Injury
Featuring for Canada Buchanan is set to serve and likely start for Canada at the 2026 World Cup.
Impact Buchanan is entering his second straight World Cup with Canada, as he has been called up for 2026, likely to earn a starting role yet again for the team. He will likely hold down the right flank of the midfield, although he is versatile and could give time in the middle or either flank of the attacking midfield. He is one of the few players on the squad who plays in a top-five league in Europe, so he will be a key player to the team, earning seven goals and one assist in 34 appearances (21 starts) with Villarreal this campaign. He will then be used as a pain playmaker on the flanks, partnering up with Alphonso Davies (hamstring) once fit, mainly used to set up Jonathan David and Cyle Larin up front.
MAY 29 • ROTOWIRE
Finds back of net Buchanan scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) in Saturday's 5-1 victory over Levante.
Impact Buchanan found the back of the net while playing in just the final minutes off the bench Saturday during the 5-1 win over Levante. The midfielder has only been used in a rotational role off the bench, starting just four times in the last nine league appearances, having scored two goals with five crosses and making three interceptons in that span

Impact Buchanan had been ruled out of last weekend's win over Celta with a knock and was listed as week-to-week at the time, making his swift return to full training a faster turnaround than initially anticipated. The Canadian midfielder will be keen to get back on the pitch for the final stretch of the season with the World Cup this summer firmly in his sights, and Villarreal will be happy to have him available again heading into Saturday's fixture against Levante.
APRIL 30 • ROTOWIRE
Misses with knock Buchanan was out for Sunday's 2-1 win over Celta due to a knock, according to Mattew Scianitti of TSN.
Impact Buchanan was not an option for Sunday's game after he was unable to train the days ahead of the contest, suffering from a knock. Luckily for the midfielder, it has only been deemed a knock, and he is week-to-week, potentially not missing much more time. They are now heading into the final stretch of the season with only five games remaining, so he will need to make a quick turnaround. Even more important, he won't want any setbacks, as he has his eyes on the World Cup this summer.
APRIL 27 • ROTOWIRE
Scores opener in 2-1 win Buchanan scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal), one cross (zero accurate) and two chances created in Sunday's 2-1 win against Elche.
Impact Buchanon scored the first goal as his side went on to win 2-1. He returned to the starting lineup after three games out of the lineup. He scored from his only shot on target since January 17th. He also created two chances in the game for the second time since December. This was his sixth goal of the season and his first since December 6th.

Impact Buchanan would come up with an assist in the 35th minute of Monday's win, finding Georges Mikautadze off of a cross in the 35th minute. This does mark his first assist of the season, although he has bagged five goals in his 21 appearances (14 starts).
FEBRUARY 10 • ROTOWIRE
Four shots in loss Buchanan registered four shots (one on goal) and one cross (zero accurate) in Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Betis.
Impact Buchanan was very active against Real Betis in a match that proved difficult for much of the Villarreal squad. He has now scored just one goal in his last nine LaLiga appearances and has struggled to find consistent end product. Three of his five league goals this season came in a single match against Girona on August 24, highlighting how limited his production has been on paper since then. Even so, his performance against Betis showed clear upside, and he will look to build on that display despite facing a tough test against Real Madrid in the next fixture.
JANUARY 20 • ROTOWIRE
Back from suspension Buchanan has ended his ban and is an option for the club moving forward.
Impact Buchanan has served his ban after a game out, with the midfielder eligible to play in upcoming games. He has served as the main starter on the right flank this season and is expected to return to that role, recording five goals in 16 appearances (10 starts) this campaign.

Picks one match suspension Buchanan will serve a one-match ban due to an accumulation of five yellow cards in La Liga.
Impact Buchanan picked up his fifth yellow card, resulting in a suspension for the La Liga match against Elche on Jan. 3. The right winger is an undisputed starter for the yellow submarine, therefore his absence will force a change in the starting lineup, with Nicolas Pepe as the main option to start in his spot.
DECEMBER 22, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Three shots Sunday Buchanan had three shots (one on goal) and one cross (zero accurate) in Sunday's 2-0 defeat versus Barcelona. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 73rd minute.
Impact Buchanan was able to rip off three shots Sunday, but only one hit the target, with neither of the three finding the back of the net. He remains at five goals this campaign in 16 appearances (10 starts) with his last coming in their previous outing.

Scores impressive goal Buchanan scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal), five crosses (two accurate) and one corner in Saturday's 2-0 win against Getafe.
Impact Buchanan opened the scoring for Villarreal late in the first half with a beautiful strike. He received a flick pass from Ayoze Perez and drilled an unstoppable shot past David Soria and into an impossible angle. The Canadian winger found the back of the net for the first time since doing so in a draw against Betis in mid-October. He's up to five goals in the current Liga campaign.

Impact Buchanan led the Villarreal attack Tuesday with three shot attempts (zero on goal) as they were eased-past in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. In addition to his attacking output, the wide-midfielder contributed one tackle (one won), one interception and one clearance to the team's defensive effort across his 83 minutes of play. After netting a hat-trick versus Girona in La Liga's Gameweek 2, Buchanan has scored just once from nine shots (three on goal) across his last 15 appearances (10 starts).

Impact Buchanan buried his fourth goal of the season with a shot from outside the box, assisted by Alberto Moleiro in the 44th minute of play. Meanwhile, this marked the first goal contribution in seven league matches for Buchanan, as his prior three goals all came in a single game. This also marked his second shot and first on target in the seven outings. Defensively, he nabbed multiple interceptions for a third time on the campaign.
