Extends contract with D.C.
Birnbaum has signed a three-year contract extension with D.C. United, the club announced Thursday.
Impact
Birnbaum has tallied 13 goals and four assists across 243 MLS appearances since joining D.C. United out of UC Berkeley in 2014, including three goals and seven clean sheets while starting 40 of a possible 43 matches since the start of last season. The 32-year-old center-back has now signed on to remain with the club through the 2025 campaign.

Contributes to first clean sheet
Birnbaum registered one shot (zero on goal) in Sunday's 0-0 draw versus Chicago Fire.
Impact
Birnbaum, the captain, played his leadership role well on Saturday but was not able to rally his team to find a goal in what was an anemic encounter with the Chicago Fire. From six appearances (five starts) he has scored once and this was his first clean sheet.

Logs in late goal
Birnbaum scored one goal to go with two shots (one on target) and two tackles (zero won) in Saturday's 3-2 defeat versus New York City FC.
Impact
Birnbaum scored a late goal Saturday, but it was not enough to seal the win for the team. It was also a rare goal from the defender, who had just two goals overall in 2022. In the defense, the 32-year-old has totaled six clearances and six interceptions thus far.

Creates two chances in start
Birnbaum took a shot on target and created two chances in Saturday's 2-0 defeat against the Crew. He also made a block, a clearance and four interceptions in the match.
Impact
Birnbaum returned to the starting lineup alongside Victor Palsson in central defense on Saturday.

Comes off bench in season opener
Birnbaum subbed in and played the final 15 minutes or so of last weekend's 3-2 victory against Toronto FC.
Impact
Birnbaum was D.C.'s first-choice center-back for much of last season, but he opened 2023 as an option off the bench while 16-year-old Matai Akinmboni and midfielder Victor Palsson got the starts instead. Birnbaum, along with new signing Derrick Williams (lower leg), should have opportunities to break into the XI sooner rather than later.

Makes four interceptions in loss
Birnbaum made a block, two clearances and four interceptions in Sunday's 5-2 Decision Day defeat against FC Cincinnati.
Impact
Birnbaum was back as a regular fixture for D.C. in 2022, scoring two goals and keeping five clean sheets in 32 MLS games (all starts) after suffering through a few injury-riddled campaigns before. But the 31-year-old is facing competition from Donovan Pines, Tony Alfaro and Brendan Hines-Ike (foot) in central defense heading into next season.

Two yellows vs LAFC
Birnbaum was shown a second yellow card and sent off in the 60th minute of Tuesday's 1-0 loss to LAFC. Prior to the foul, he had two shots (one on target) and two interceptions.
Impact
As if playing LAFC isn't enough of a challenge already, Birnbaum's second yellow in the 60th minute of Tuesday's contest forced United to play the final 30 minutes with 10 men. It was a huge blow for the struggling side, as Kwadwo Opoku cashed in with a game-winning breakaway goal just seven minutes later. Birnbaum will be suspended for Saturday's clash against the Union, with Donovan Pines likely to replace him in central defense.

Starts out night with own goal
Birnbaum scored an own goal during Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Charlotte FC.
Impact
Birnbaum has played in every match this season but it's hard to stay consistent when both the team and manager have changed midway through the campaign. He'll next face New York Red Bulls, which scored four goals during a recent loss to Colorado.

Scores rare goal
Birnbaum scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) in Sunday's 2-1 loss to CF Montreal.
Impact
Birnbaum scored his first goal of the season against Montreal, a rare sight for the center-back who averages a little over a goal per season in his career. Birnbaum isn't much of an offensive threat going forward and D.C. United are generally a mess all over the pitch, though Birnbaum can fill the stat sheet defensively. Next up is a Sunday clash with Orlando.

Scores against Toronto FC
Birnbaum scored a goal in a 3-1 win against Toronto FC on Sunday.
Impact
Birnbaum had a good game for the visitors. The 30-year-old scored the team's first goal in the match which was his second of the league campaign. Other than that, Birnbaum also won three aerial duels.

Scores goal against Cincinnati
Birnbaum scored a goal and recorded an assist in Saturday's 4-2 victory against FC Cincinnati. He also made a block, five clearances and three interceptions in the match.
Impact
Birnbaum was solid defensively until conceding a pair of consolation goals on Saturday, but he was also a surprising spark in attack as he grabbed his first goal and assist of the season. He will be confident ahead of Wednesday's clash against Minnesota United, which have scored 29 times in 25 MLS matches.

Scores own goal versus Philadelphia
Birnbaum scored an own goal, made two interceptions, committed one foul and made four clearances in Saturday's 3-1 win versus Philadelphia Union.
Impact
Birnbaum was unfortunate to score an own goal early in the first half Saturday, fortunately it did not end up costing his side to lose the game. The center-back holds little fantasy value outside of racking up defensive stats and being an aerial threat on set piece situations.

Takes massive blow to head in loss
Birnbaum made three clearances and drew one foul before he was replaced by teammate Joseph Mora in the 73rd minute during the 5-2 loss to Nashville on Sunday.
Impact
Birnbaum was one of the many reasons D.C United failed to conjure any success in their lopsided loss Sunday. The defender missed player markers multiple times, letting Nashville run rampant on the defense. Birnbaum would eventually leave the match however, after he took a massive blow to the head during a Nashville set-piece. It is unknown if he will miss time, but by the looks of it, the injury was pretty severe.

Makes bench Sunday
Birnbaum (ankle) is on the bench for Sunday's game against the Red Bulls.
Impact
Birnbaum is not fit to start, but his return to the bench is a great sign for a DC United team that is quite thin when it comes to defensive depth.
