Contract negotiations ongoing
Valenzuela's contract has run out with Columbus, and he will become a free agent at the end of the year if no new deal is agreed upon.
Impact
Valenzula endured an injury-plagued 2021 that saw him record the lowest amount of playing time of his three seasons in Columbus. The 23-year-old is in talks with the Crew about a potential new contract, but if nothing materializes then he will enter free agency at the end of the year.

Takes three shots in win
Valenzuela took three shots and created two chances in last weekend's 2-0 victory against Chicago. He also made three clearances and two interceptions in the match.
Impact
Valenzuela was hampered by a few hamstring injuries this season, and was only able to make 14 appearances (12 starts) in MLS, keeping three clean sheets. The 23-year-old will want to return fully fit in 2022 and make the Crew's left back spot his own once again.

Plays 45 minutes
Valenzuela played 45 minutes during a 1-0 loss Saturday against Inter Miami.
Impact
Though Crew veteran Waylon Francis seems to remain the team's primary left-back, Valenzuela was its main player there before multiple hamstring injuries affected his availability. The latter recorded starts 22 times across 28 games they played during 2020.

Seen in training
Valenzuela (hamstring) was spotted in Tuesday's training session by Jacob Myers of the Columbus Dispatch.
Impact
Valenzuela has played just four times this season as the Crew struggle to stay in contention without many key players down the stretch. With any luck, Valenzuela will be able to revise that tale over the final weeks of the season if he's fit enough to start over Waylon Francis in Saturday's trip to Inter Miami.

Re-injures hamstring
Valenzuela came off the pitch early, holding his hamstring during Saturday's two-all draw with New England.

Questionable to play Saturday
Valenzuela (thigh) is questionable for Saturday's match against Chicago, according to Jacob Myers of the Columbus Dispatch.
Impact
Valenzuela has been able to play since the first match of the season because of his injury, which has allowed Waylon Francis to start at left-back. However, Francis is also questionable to play because of injury, which could force the Crew to use Pedro Santos at left-back again. If Valenzuela is unable to play this weekend, his next opportunity will come Wednesday against Philadelphia.
