Jose Maria Gimenez - Soccer News, Rumors, & Updates

Busy defensively Gimenez generated one tackle (zero won), six clearances and two interceptions in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to Sevilla.

Impact Gimenez had everything to do defensively during Wednesday's loss. He piled on the volume and shut down wave after wave of attacks, but it wasn't enough as the team in front of him offered nothing going forward. The center-back is likely to have some more tough showings coming up in the coming weeks, where he could be busy yet again.

Joins Deportivo on loan Gimenez has joined Deportivo La Coruna on loan from Atletico Madrid through June 2027, with the deal including an option to buy.

Impact Gimenez brings considerable top-level experience to Deportivo after spending the vast majority of his career with Atletico Madrid. The 31-year-old center-back has made 270 La Liga appearances and another 69 in the Champions League, while also earning 99 caps for Uruguay. A two-time La Liga champion and Europa League winner, Gimenez should immediately contend for a starting role in central defense.

Trains with potential starters Gimenez trained with the projected starters ahead of Friday's game against Spain, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Impact Gimenez was on the bench against Cape Verde but wasn't fit enough to play after suffering a minor setback. However, the defender has been training in the last few days and even made the projected starting lineup in Wednesday's session. The Atletico Madrid center-back looks fit enough to start if manager Marcelo Bielsa decides it.

Bench option Sunday Gimenez is on the bench for Sunday's match against Cape Verde.

Impact Gimenez is back with his team as expected Sunday after he trained this week, with the defender fit for a bench role. He will hope to see time to test his legs after an absence from their opening match. He does hold enough quality to enter the starting XI in future matches, something to watch for once fully fit.

Back in training, expected on bench Gimenez (ankle) appeared in Saturday's practice with the Uruguayan national team but was included in the substitutes unit ahead of Sunday's clash with Cape Verde, Joaquin Pisa of E...

Impact Gimenez will likely sit a second straight game on the bench or get few minutes of play in the best-case scenario after struggling with an ankle injury and missing Friday's training session. However, his return to regular work means he should be available Sunday, giving a great news to the Uruguayan squad. If Gimenez continues to progress in his recovery, he'll challenge Mathias Olivera and Sebastian Caceres for starts at some point in the latter stages of the competition.

JUNE 20 • ROTOWIRE

Doesn't train Friday Gimenez didn't train Friday due to ankle pain, and his presence in Sunday's game against Cape Verde is uncertain, according to Joaquin Pisa of El Observador.

Impact Gimenez didn't play in the opener against Saudi Arabia, and based on this latest setback, it wouldn't be surprising if he's on the bench again. The idea would be to have the Atletico Madrid defender as fit as possible for the clash against Spain on Friday, June 26. If Gimenez doesn't play against Cape Verde, Sebastian Caceres and Mathias Olivera would operate as the center-back pairing once again.

Return to bench Gimenez (ankle) is on the bench for Monday's match against Saudi Arabia.

Impact Gimenez is back in the team sheet Monday as expected, although he is not yet fit enough to start, instead serving from the bench. The expectation will be to see him enter the field as the match goes on, giving him some time to test his legs. He will then eye a return to a starting role in the coming games, coming in for Sebastian Caceres or Mathias Olivera.

Recovered from injury Gimenez (ankle) has rejoined full training after overcoming his injury, about which coach Marcelo Bielsa stated "Gimenez had an ankle problem and joined training a week later becau...

Impact Gimenez is still expected to be on the bench for Uruguay's initial World Cup match against Saudi Arabia, but he'll have a significant chance to regain his starting spot in the subsequent meeting with Cape Verde. Meanwhile, Sebastian Caceres could get an opportunity alongside Mathias Olivera at center-back. The Atletico Madrid player has been sidelined for most of the last two months, though he was averaging 4.0 clearances and 1.6 tackles per game in La Liga play when available. He's expected to play a major role for Uruguay once he's fit enough to play full games.

Could be on bench Monday Gimenez (ankle) is likely to be eligible as a substitute option if required Monday against Saudi Arabia following his participation in training sessions, Fabian Bertolini of El Esp...

Impact Gimenez was expected to miss his country's World Cup opener and might still not play even if he's on the bench, with the coaching staff likely avoiding any risk ahead of the latter stages of the competition. In any case, the defender could give the team a huge boost whenever he's back on the pitch, especially with Ronald Araujo (calf) also struggling to overcome a fitness issue. Sebastian Caceres (concussion) and Santi Bueno are expected to form a natural center-back pairing in the absence of Gimenez and Araujo, while the inclusion of Juan Sanabria at left-back and deployment of Mathias Olivera in the center could be another possibility.

JUNE 13 • ROTOWIRE

Won't play in WC opener Gimenez (ankle) won't be available for Monday's World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia, according to Soledad Cejas of DSports.

Impact Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa has made a decision regarding Gimenez, and the center-back won't be risked to avoid further complications in his recovery from injury. This means Santi Bueno is pretty much a lock to start at center-back. Gimenez will aim to return in the team's second group-stage match against Cape Verde on Sunday, June 21.

JUNE 12 • ROTOWIRE

Not expected to play in opener Gimenez (ankle) is not expected to be risked in Uruguay's World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia on Monday, according to TyC Sports.

Impact Gimenez was seen training on the side Thursday alongside some of the other injured players, such as Giorgian De Arrascaeta (calf) and Ronald Araujo (calf). Santi Bueno, Santiago Caceres (concussion) and Matias Oliveira are options to start at center-back if both Gimenez and Araujo are sidelined.

JUNE 11 • ROTOWIRE

Training away from group Gimenez (ankle) is not training with the group and is a major doubt for the World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia on Monday, according to Oscar Garcia of MARCA.

Impact Gimenez might be close to full fitness, but the fact that he trained away from the group just a few days before the World Cup opener is certainly a concern. Ronald Araujo (calf) is not expected to be available in the first two games, and Joaquin Piquerez (ankle) is also training on the sidelines, so it seems Uruguay will be very weakened on the defensive end for the opener. Santi Bueno is likely to move into the starting lineup with these absences.

JUNE 11 • ROTOWIRE

Close to full fitness Gimenez (ankle) has progressed in his recovery and is a likely option for the Uruguayan national team in the upcoming World Cup after coach Marcelo Bielsa said "I would almost say...

Impact Gimenez should be ready to appear in international activity after missing the last three games of the campaign with Atletico Madrid. The veteran defender will be reliable for his individual duel strength and could aim to rack up clean sheets if he's able to start in the first few games of the World Cup. In that case, he'll likely join Ronald Araujo at center-back, limiting Sebastian Caceres to a substitute spot.

Impact Gimenez was forced off in the 20th minute and medical tests confirmed the severity of the damage, with the Uruguayan set to undergo physiotherapy and gym rehabilitation with his return to competition dependent on the evolution of the injury. Gimenez ends the campaign with one goal and one assist alongside 27 tackles and 80 clearances across 22 appearances in all competitions, having shown his quality whenever fit for the Colchoneros. The focus now shifts entirely to being ready for Uruguay at the World Cup this summer, with the recovery timeline making any involvement in Atletico's remaining fixtures extremely unlikely as those injuries require at least four weeks to heal.

MAY 11 • ROTOWIRE

Taken off after 20 minutes Gimenez was forced off the field in the 20th minute of Saturday's match against Celta Vigo due to an injury.

Impact Gimenez would leave the field just ahead of the half-hour mark Saturday, suffering from an injury that was too much to play through. With only a few games left in the season, this is something to watch, as a muscle injury could keep him out for the rest of the season. He was replaced by Robin Le Normand, who would likely continue in that spot if Gimenez remains out.

MAY 9 • ROTOWIRE

Picked for bench Gimenez (undisclosed) is on the bench for Tuesday's match against Arsenal.

Impact Gimenez is with his team Tuesday as they try to make their way to the UCL final, an option from the bench to start. This will give the club some more depth in the defense, a useful option if they find themselves with the lead and defending their net. That said, he will likely only be used if certain scenarios arise.

MAY 5 • ROTOWIRE

Returns in squad list Gimenez (undisclosed) is travelling with Atletico's squad for Tuesday's Champions League semifinal second leg against Arsenal, the club posted.

Impact Gimenez has been unable to train on the pitch with his teammates since early April and has not featured in the starting lineup in recent months, making his inclusion in the travelling squad a more encouraging development than recent updates had suggested. Whether he features at the Emirates or simply travels as a depth option will depend on how his condition evolves ahead of Tuesday, with Robin Le Normand and David Hancko the established defensive partnership for Atletico's biggest European night of the season.

MAY 4 • ROTOWIRE

Not training, timeline unclear Gimenez (undisclosed) remains unable to train on the pitch with his teammates and has no clear return timeline, according to Pascual Ruiz Arnal of Marca.

Impact Gimenez has now been sidelined since early April without any clarity on the nature of a issue keeping him away from the training pitch. His absence is primarily a depth concern given his limited role in the starting lineup in recent months, but the continued lack of information from the club makes it impossible to project when the Uruguayan defender might return to contention for Atletico. Robin Le Normand and Clement Lenglet are expected to see increased playing time for the Colchoneros until he returns.

MAY 1 • ROTOWIRE

Remains out Gimenez (undisclosed) has been confirmed as the only player definitively ruled out of Saturday's Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, according to Atletico Universe.

Impact Gimenez will now miss a fourth consecutive game without any clarity on the nature of his issue, and his absence from La Cartuja extends what has been a frustrating spell on the sidelines for the Uruguayan defender. His omission is primarily a depth concern given his limited role in the starting lineup in recent weeks, but with Atletico's defensive resources already stretched heading into the final, every available body counts for coach Diego Simeone's side.

APRIL 17 • ROTOWIRE

Confirmed out Gimenez (undisclosed) was left out of the matchday squad for Tuesday's Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Barcelona, the club posted.

Impact Gimenez will miss a third consecutive game without any clarity on the nature of his issue or a return timeline. His absence is primarily a depth concern given that he has not been a regular starter in recent matches, but with David Hancko (ankle) also unavailable and Marc Pubill suspended, Atletico head into the biggest European fixture of their season with their defensive resources stretched thin. Clement Lenglet and Robin Le Normand are expected to form the central defensive partnership against Barcelona.

APRIL 14 • ROTOWIRE

Misses training, likely out Tuesday Gimenez (ankle) did not train with the group Monday and is doubtful for Tuesday's Champions League return leg against Barcelona, according to RNE Deportes.

Impact Gimenez did not train with the group Monday and should be out for Tuesday's Champions League return leg against Barcelona, having already missed the last two matches due to an undisclosed injury. The potential absence of the Uruguayan is a major blow, with Marc Pubill suspended and David Hancko also potentially unavailable in the back line, while Clement Lenglet is expected to start alongside Robin Le Normand in central defense if he is ruled out again.

APRIL 13 • ROTOWIRE

Still sidelined for time being Gimenez (undisclosed) was absent from Atletico's latest training session Friday and remains unavailable for the time being, according to Pascual Ruiz Arnal of Marca.

Impact Gimenez will miss a second game in a row due to injury without any clear indication of when he will return, leaving his timeline uncertain. The defender has not started in recent matches, so his continued absence is primarily a depth concern rather than a starting lineup issue for coach Diego Simeone. Marc Pubill is expected to hold a larger role in the back line until Gimenez returns.

APRIL 10 • ROTOWIRE

Missing with discomfort Gimenez (undisclosed) is out for Wednesday's match against Barcelona, according to his club.

Impact Gimenez is not going to play Wednesday after the defender didn't train Monday, with the defender unable to play due to physical discomfort. This is only a loss of depth for the club, as he has not started in their past three games. However, this does leave them a bit low on depth if an injury or sending off takes place.

APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE

Doubtful after missing practice Gimenez could miss Wednesday's Champions League clash with Barcelona as he picked up an issue during the last league game and didn't train with the squad Monday, El Observador repo...

Impact Gimenez's status is now unclear following a run of three appearances off the bench across all club competitions. Even if he achieves a quick recovery, his involvement might be limited in the upcoming UCL action, but his absence would reduce the team's defensive depth behind Robin Le Normand, David Hancko, Marc Pubill (ribs) and Clement Lenglet. The Uruguayan has made 12 La Liga starts this season but has been frequently limited by injuries and rotation.

APRIL 6 • ROTOWIRE

Error leads to goal Gimenez generated one clearance and one interception in Sunday's 3-2 loss against Real Madrid.

Impact Gimenez replaced Robin Le Normand at halftime and was responsible for the error that led to Federico Valverde's goal in the 55th minute. Gimenez has now had poor back-to-back performances.
